OPENING RECEPTION THURSDAY JULY 2nd, 7PM-10PM

A woman made a man
A man he made a house
And when they lay together
Little creatures all come out
- David Byrne “Creatures of Love” Lyrics. Little Creatures. 1985

McCaig-Welles Gallery is pleased to present little creatures, a group exhibition curated by Megan Hays. Selecting works from among the artists represented by the gallery and from among her peers, the curator sought out emerging and mid-career artists working in a variety of media to participate in her curatorial debut.

Inspired by the Talking Heads’ song “Creatures of Love”, the works chosen for the exhibition are imbued with an adult sense of wonder: dealing particularly with themes of love, sex, responsibility and consequence. While facing a present in which many of us have seen our paychecks dwindle and in some cases stop altogether, our lives march on with the volatility of our relationships remaining intact. In spite of all the practical contingencies of our daily lives, the responsibility implicit in the joys of childbirth and in the grief of death remains unaltered. little creatures seeks to show the artists’ vision of the emotional landscape in an endeavor that is invariably topical.

Megan Hays would like to thank Melissa McCaig-Welles, the gallery director, for her generosity and support, along with Helena Fang, Ashley Giahn, Andy Lynch, Christina Miller, Jeannette Tiso and the exhibiting artists, whose time and effort made this exhibition possible.

For further press information and visual requests, please contact Helena Fang, Gallery Assistant, at info@mccaigwelles.com or 718.384.8729.
